April 2009 Volume 2,
Issue 5
Sunshine, gentle off-shore breezes and
cotton-puff clouds dotting a cobalt-blue Carolina sky
have moved us from spring to near summer conditions here
at Prince Resort. Signs of growth and vitality appear
all across the Grand Strand.
Over the past
month, we have celebrated the arrival of many guests
-spring breakers out of school, SOS shag dancers, bikers
on vacation, Mother's Day celebrations, and even several
weddings. With each passing day, more and more colorful
beach blankets and toys, sun hats, and fishing gear
appear on the sand and pier here at Cherry Grove. Of
course, being at The Cherry Grove Pier, we keep close
tabs on the fishing scene, so we proudly announce right
here that the fish are biting! In fact, a flounder
tournament is currently in progress! So, we hope that
you will log onto our newly redesigned website with its
Cherry Grove Pier micro-blog of "what's biting now"
associated with Twitter.com. With its fresh coat of
paint, clean pools, and other elements of spring
"spruce-up," Prince Resort welcomes incoming guests with
open arms.
During off hours, some of the Prince
Resort volunteers for The American Cancer Society's
Relay for Life spend hours and efforts in raising money
for this worthy cause. On April 24th the Relay event
occurred in Myrtle Beach at The Ripken Experience (see
more about that later in the newsletter). Other
endeavors include fund-raisers such as bake sales. Later
this summer, another fund-raiser, The First Annual
"Swing Fore the Cure" Golf Tournament, will take place
on August 1st. This charity golf tournament and silent
auction for Relay for Life promises to be lots of fun
for all the participants.
So, if you have not
yet formed plans to take a summer break from work, we
want to encourage you to consider coming to the beach!
With discounts still available, taking a vacation has
never before been so affordable. Let us help you plan
your 2009 vacation here at Prince Resort.
See
you soon!
Your friends at Prince
Resort!
We are pleased to announce a redesign of
our website at www.PrinceResortOnline.com.
You will see that the new layout is more user-friendly
than ever, enhancing your exploration through our site
with drop-down menus and clear directions to see what
you want to see and move you closer to your goal of
experiencing an exhilarating beach vacation.
You
can book your vacations, check availability, explore our
amenities, compare our calendar of events around the
area with your plans, and also see descriptions of
activities around the area in the Prince newsletter and
"news" articles.
We hope that you will take a
moment to visit the new web site.
As the season heats up, Prince Resort's
restaurant 3500 Ocean Grill is
busily planning creative ways to meet the needs of
upcoming events such as weddings and banquets. Several
have already occurred. At the end of April and again in
mid-May Prince was the site for surfside weddings with
receptions held here at 3500,
illustrated here with these behind-the-scenes shots of
Joe Collins and Cory Carwile preparing appetizer
platters. Prince is so well suited to holding such
events because of the restaurant's oceanfront charm and
its ability to set just the right scene. With the
talents of the organized kitchen staff and servers,
guests have nothing to worry about.
In fact,
3500 is a unique landmark
restaurant here at Cherry Grove because its oceanfront
dining tables provide a comfortable classic ambiance for
guests. Adjacent to it is an art deco lounge boasting
conviviality and relaxation. Together, the dining area
and the lounge make 3500 a
wonderful venue for banquets and parties.
Whether your choice is a full sit-down dinner or
buffet, contact 3500 Ocean
Grill to discuss the possibilities!
Volunteers
from the Prince Resort participated in the 24th Annual
Myrtle Beach Relay for Life, held overnight on April
24th at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. In all,
we did very well raising money on behalf of The American
Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and each volunteer who
attended the 12 hour Relay event enjoyed meeting with
other teams from organizations around town and sharing
in the over-all effort to bring an end to the disease of
cancer.
One of the many
high points of the evening was learning that the award
for the First Annual Ms. Relay Myrtle Beach went to
Team Myrtle Beach Seaside Resorts. The
honors were bestowed on Dennis Chestnut (shown in the
photo wearing pink for breast cancer awareness) who,
during normal business hours, serves as the
broad-shouldered Director of Engineering with our
company. For this occasion, he donned his best winning
smile and charming disguise made just for this occasion
to call attention to a serious and worthy cause, the
need to fight cancer.
Held at The
Ripken Experience in downtown Myrtle Beach, the 2009
Relay event lasted from 7 pm on that Friday night until
7 am the next morning. During the night each Relay team
representative walked the sports track at the ball park,
replacing one member with another throughout the night.
This 12 hour festivity increased our company's entire
contribution to The American Cancer Society to $9,000-a
fabulous tribute to The Relay for Life!
More fund
raising events for this cause are ongoing. The company
will host a golf tournament and silent auction to raise
additional funds for this worthy endeavor. Called
The First Annual "Swing Fore the Cure" Golf
Tournament, it will be held August 1st at
Myrtle Beach National's Kings North Golf Course.
Competition is expected to be more fun than fierce, with
free beverages, lunch, great prizes, and, of course,
golf. Play begins with a 9 am "shotgun" start. As the
last player comes in and registers a score, competitors
will proceed to the awards luncheon held at the course
where announcements will occur of the winning bids for
the silent auction, plus prizes for the tournament: top
placement in the golf, also last place, closest to the
pin, longest drives, and so much more.
Between
now and August 1st, the silent auction will take bids on
assorted prizes contributed by donor companies listed
below:
- T-Bonz
- Family Kingdom
- Ripley's Aquarium
- Tanger Outlets
- Tri-County Mechanical Inc.
- Enchanted Sailing Charters
- Wal-Mart
- SeaBoard Signs
- Target Media
- Legends in Concert
We want to take
this occasion to express our heartfelt appreciation to
each of these contributors for their generous donations
of prizes. Every one of the contributors, as well as the
volunteers, is an integral piece of the overall
collective effort needed to raise such important funds
in the fight against cancer. We invite you to join in
the effort by logging on the web link,
www.MBSRAnnualGolfTournament.com. Here, you will see
further information about the tournament, the silent
auction, and the prizes. There you can also register to
play in the tournament.
In summary, costs to
play in the golf tournament range from $75/individual to
$260/foursome team, and hole sponsorships are $100 each.
For players, spectators, or anyone interested in
supporting this endeavor, note the added feature of a
"bonus package" of entry tickets for prizes (2 mulligans
plus 5 raffle tickets) at $20/individual and
$80/foursome. We hope to see you out there on the
course!
As part of the
infrastructure of Prince Resort, our Reservations
Department agents are part of the seamless planning
process that guests experience when they plan and book a
vacation.
Taking calls in shifts from early
morning to well after normal business hours, some
Reservation agents, such as Sabrina Wilson and Roger
Ramaswamy shown here, are occasionally located at
Prince, helping guests with price quotations, booking
vacation accommodations, taking questions about the
property and the area, and handling the computer
applications with precision. When they are located at
Prince, Reservations agents have access to a large
window overlooking The Cherry Grove Pier and the Prince
shoreline, a view that makes their job easier when
answering callers' questions about current weather or
ocean conditions. With "information" as their
mainstay, our Reservation agents are often the first
voice of customer service that guests hear. With
accuracy and professionalism, Sabrina, Roger, and,
indeed, all the Reservations agents work hard to assist
callers, ensuring that each guest's vacation has all the
fine details worked out, everything from dates of
arrival to tee times to theater tickets.
As the temperature heats up, nothing is

Marking the unofficial beginning of summer,
Mayfest party-goers had a rocking good
time on May 9th at the annual music festival in North
Myrtle Beach!
The Executives and Chairmen of the
Board got the beach music going shortly after noon, and
dancing feet in the crowd moved and grooved to the
sounds. Around the outside of the venue, curious
onlookers could not take their eyes off of Bubba, the
camel, who came in from Eudora Farms specifically to
make even more fun happen. With a children's fun zone
complete with camel, pony rides, and other play things
to keep the kids' attention, everyone of all ages had a
great time.
Dean Torrence, Al Jardine, and the
Surfcity Allstars topped off the afternoon with fabulous
music. "It's an absolutely perfect place to play,"
Torrence said of his beach venue. As one of the original
members of The Beach Boys, he is not only a legend in
the music world but also he is also a legend here on
Main Street where he has pleased crowds for years. With
The Surfcity Allstars," the
musicians performed to closing. They had been preceded
by the Coco Loco Band, Carolina Dance
Partners, and "General" Norman Johnson and the Chairmen
of the Board.

Our stay was wonderful;
the room was very clean (perhaps a bit heavy on the
smell of cleaning solutions); staff was friendly; had
one take out meal from the Grill and that was very good.
We would come back again.

I discovered the
Prince Resort via TravelZoo.com, and it is the first
internet special deal that I have actually tried. By
linking to your resort through TravelZoo, I could check
out the ratings via TripAdvisor.com. Although I was
pleased with the overall grade you had, I had my doubts
from reading consistent comments about hard beds, dirty
hallways, lazy staff. So I booked my room thinking it
was a bit of a gamble. I have to say that I was
pleasantly surprised and very pleased. The check-in
staff member named Kimberly ?was polite and efficient.
The room was much nicer than I expected and a lot more
quiet than I expected. We had room 1931 and loved the
way there were limited neighbors. The bed was rather
hard, and the carpet a little spotty, but everything
else was much better than expected. Loved the view.
Great tub. Good A/C system, etc. There did seem to be
evidence of smoking on balconies, elevators, and by the
9th floor pool. Overall, I would rate my stay a 4.75.
out of 5. I have told a lot of co-workers and friends
about the Prince.

My family took a weekend
after my girls spent their time there when it first
opened up. It was on their suggestion that we looked in
to staying there. After spending twenty spring and
eighteen summers at the Sand Dunes and Ocean Dunes, this
was truly a new place we will be spending our vacations
from now on. We can't wait until August to spend a week
there.

We stayed at the Prince last summer (mid
August, 2008) with our daughter and grandkids. [The]
first time we had visited Myrtle since our own kids were
young. (40 yrs). I took a chance and found Prince on
[the] internet and booked reservations having
"reservations" of my own. What a wonderful surprise
awaited me!!!! Our suite on the 7th floor was exactly
what I requested and was just absolutely perfect!!! The
rooms were kept immaculately clean, linens and beds were
very comfortable and fresh, the washer-dryer set-up was
an answer to my daughter's prayer [with] two little
ones. We all were overwhelmed by the efficiency and
facilities. If budget permits, we intend to return this
year. We really are looking to that!!!!

that you will return to us soon, here on the beach!
Fun Facts
With about 2,800 species, palms have been one of the
most important plants in human history, providing people
with seeds for food, wood for house building, leaves for
roofing and clothing, plus oils, waxes, and even wines.
Contrary to the notion that daydreaming is indicates
laziness, a new study has found that letting the mind
wander can actually allow the parts of the brain
associated with problem-solving to become more active.
Dolphins sleep with one eye open at a time and are
known to overcome sleep deprivation and remain
constantly vigilant for days at a time by resting one
half of their brain while the other half remains
conscious.
The oceans cover more than 70 percent of the earth's
surface, yet their depths remain largely unknown. They
are a frontier that scientists are racing to explore
using tools such as the deep-ocean submersible called
Alvin.
Many deep ocean octopuses trace their origins back
to relatives that swam in the waters around Antarctica.
There are more than 700 species new to science found
scurrying, scampering and swimming in the frigid waters
between 2,000 and 21,000 feet below the surface of the
Weddell Sea off Antarctica. "The Antarctic deep sea is
potentially the cradle of life of the global marine
species," said Angelika Brandt, an expert from the
Zoological Institute of Hamburg.
Once thought barren and sparsely populated, the
deep-ocean floor is home to rich and diverse communities
of bacteria. In fact, scientists have found that the
seafloor contains three to four times more bacteria than
the waters above, raising the question of how the
organisms survive.
Some coral reefs are found thousands of feet below
the ocean surface where they have grown in the frigid
waters for millennia. Like tree rings, they provide an
archive of global environmental change.
True sea salt should be moist to the touch with its
prism-like "mother liquor" or bitterns surrounding it.
When sea salt is ground, the resulting gasses smell a
little like violets.
If you have a newspaper clipping that you would like
to preserve, mix a large bottle of club soda and cup of
milk of magnesia. Soak the clipping for 20 minutes in
the solution (as flat as possible). Let the clipping
air-dry, again flat. Once dry, it will last for many
years.
Jellyfish and other stinging creatures that live in
the water often look like balloons or plastic toys to
children. Advise children not to touch any "balloons" or
unfamiliar items in the water or on land.
Fathers tend to determine the height of their child,
mothers their weight.
