January 2010                                                                                                                  Volume 2, Issue 1

Welcome to Prince Resort's first newsletter of 2010! It is hard to believe that another year has arrived, with a new realm of possibilities in coastal life! The promise of amazing things generates a buzz of excitement here at the beach! Come see what we have going on!

Some of our guests who over-winter here, snowbirds and other long-term guests, have commented that our stretch of early-January low temperatures reminded them of being back at home, but in no time at all things warmed up. By mid-month, however, balmy sunshiny days returned, prompting the warm-weather clothing to return to the shoreline for activities such as walking, jogging and fishing. While more of the successful fishing is occurring off shore at the reefs and Gulf Stream, we see certain enjoyment on the faces of those casting a line at the shoreline, settling in a beach chair, and pondering seagulls during the wait for a fish to bite (or not).

Even during the chilly weather, not everyone has felt, well, dormant. We saw some wet-suit-clad surfers out in the water, testing their skills against off-shore waves. Brave shell-hunters walked the shoreline during the cold days, demonstrating that, with layers of sweaters and coats, even sunny days in January here at the beach can be invigorating and delightful! Some of our employees are even taking the pro-active approach to health by exercising, eating right, and training for up-coming marathon races.

Despite the chillier days, our staff here at Prince has not been deterred from preparations for spring and summer. During this slower off-season, we are busily freshening the painted areas, improving the function of pools and air conditioning systems, enhancing amenities, training staff, and designing new ways to provide even better service to our guests. Following last year's busy Christmas banquets and New Year's Eve party here at 3500 Ocean Grill, our food and beverage staff has redesigned the menu with an eye to fresh new options for exciting diners. Many of our returning guests who stop in for dinner or arrange long weekend get-aways are already commenting on the invigorated atmosphere here at Prince, new energy for 2010!

Come see for yourself!

Happy New Year 2010 from the staff at Prince Resort.

More than just a meal service, 3500 provides banquet and meeting catering for special events. With the constantly busy pace in his work environment, Richard uses his ingenuity and skills to organize these large and varied events, daily meal services, and yet still be available to step in when needed for the less complicated tasks of restaurant management such as dish-washing. Consistently throughout his work day and work week, Richard is known for maintaining an up-beat, courteous, and resourceful demeanor, to the delight of many of his co-workers who recently presented him with a "thank you" recognition for his care and consideration, even during busier moments.

Cherry Grove Pier News

With the return of warmer weather in this first month of the New Year, people are venturing outside and coming to the pier for fishing, sight-seeing, and walking exercise. Lately, we have seen families with children there on their long weekend breaks from winter.

Before long crowds of anglers will set up their fishing stations at the railings, toss out lines, and start pulling in fish. In preparations for the increased numbers of people here, the management and staff at the pier are taking advantage of the relative quiet and warmer weather to assess the pier's amenities and make improvements where needed. Here are a few of those changes:

  • Reviewing and improving the boards on the pier for safety and comfort.
  • Organizing and improving the tackle shop with, among other things, a photo of the largest shark caught on the pier plus a news article describing the adventure.
  • Reviewing fishing spots on the pier for elements of convenience (seating, fish-cleaning stations, etc.)
  • New fresh menu for the Boardwalk Beach Café including wraps, salads, delicious burgers, and more.
  • Daily fishing information from the knowledgeable staff in the pier's tackle shop.

Even if you are just passing through our area, stop in for a snack and stroll on the pier!

Featured Recipe - The Most Dangerous Microwave Cake Recipe in the World

This recipe is considered "dangerous" because with it, you are only five minutes away from having ready-to-eat chocolate cake made from scratch. Kids love helping with the preparations, and the process is even more fun if you designate a special mug just for making the cake. This recipe serves two people willing to share, but only one real chocolate-cake lover at a time. Try this for Valentine's Day, too.

Ingredients:
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • 3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 large coffee mug

Directions

  • Lightly spray a cooking oil on the inside of a microwave-safe mug.
  • Add dry ingredients to the mug and mix well.
  • Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
  • Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
  • Add the chocolate chips if you prefer this option.
  • Add the vanilla extract and mix again.
  • Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high setting, or power 9 or 10 - watch that you do not overcook). The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed. Test for doneness by spearing the baked cake with a toothpick which should appear clean at removal.
  • Allow the cake to cool about 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges of the cake and tip it out onto a plate if desired, or eat it directly from the mug.
  • [Optional] Sift powdered sugar on the top of the cake or whipped topping for even more calories and flavor.

Fun Facts

An ocean current is a stream of water moving through a larger body of water. Some are so clearly defined that they have been given names such as the Gulf Stream. The greatest of all ocean currents is the West Wind Drift current that circles the continent of Antarctica at a speed of about three-quarters of a mile per hour, 2,000 times the flow of the Amazon, the earth's greatest river!

Ocean salt alone possesses the power to restore wholeness to the human internal seas, our body fluids.

For driving in fog, smear a vehicle's headlights with a paste made of dry mustard mixed with a bit of water - instant fog lights! It washes easily off when unneeded.

During the spring, the "run" of soft-shelled crabs lasts for about 2 weeks while growing crabs shed their smaller shells in favor of growing larger ones.

Almost 80% of our flavor of food comes from smell. Small molecules and atoms floating around in the air actually make up our ability to determine what we are eating. The average human nose can detect over 10,000 individual smells.

The M&M in M&M candy stands for "Mars & Murrie," the owners of the company who produce it.

[We spent] a relaxing visit @ The Prince, in the Cherry Grove Area @ NMB, SC. It was cold, but a perfect place to sit back in a beautiful one bedroom condo with beach front balcony ...

Wanted to let you know that having a person verifying pool passes at the Prince [Tower] 1 has been the smartest thing done this year. Makes a world of difference - very enjoyable for guests and owners now. I have heard many people comment about this in positive way.....

We just completed our second [summer] trip to Prince Resort. Vacation time is precious, and once again, we were very satisfied to have invested our time at Prince Resort. The oceanfront view is spectacular, and the 2 BR unit is perfect for our family of 4 with wonderful amenities that enable us to dine in or out. Staying in a single hotel room is simply out of the question compared with a stay at Prince Resort. We also appreciate the cleanliness of the hotel, as well as the ample storage space in our room that helped us remain organized all week long. Keep up the fantastic job, and hope to see you next year!
Sincerely, The Weible Email from Prince Resort's quality control network. Wieble. Message dated 08.18.09.
