December 2008
Volume 1, Issue 5
Thank you, one and all, for helping us make November at Prince Resort, in particular the Thanksgiving Dinner in November, a great success! Some guests stayed with us over several days, others stayed just for the long weekend, and still others discovered us for the first time, and for each and every one, we are very thankful.
Our top-quality staff at 3500 Ocean Grill presented a fabulous meal for its holiday feast this year in 4 seating periods, a total of 168 guests. The wonderful menu satisfied everyone quite well with its 8 turkeys, 6 pork loins, 24 chickens, and Chef George's own stuffing. Nothing much remained at meal's end except just enough to make a delicious soup the next day. With 9 homemade pumpkin pies and a surprise addition of homemade rice pudding (described humbly as the Chef's "best in 54 years of cooking"), guests sent out congratulations to the entire team for an excellent array of tastes and textures.
As November's weather gave us everything from shirt-sleeve temperatures to blustery winds, all the signs pointed to winter around the corner, and so our entire staff has busily been making preparations for everything from holiday festivities to long-term guests from northern climates. We look forward to greeting guests staying with us through holidays and encourage anyone staying here or even traveling through the Grand Strand area to round out their "old" year and start their 2009 with us here at Prince. As you will read in an article below, also on our web site under "Specials," our New Year's party is going to lots of fun!
While we hope to see you before the year ends, for one and all, we extend our heartiest good wishes for wonderful 2009. On New Year's Day and the whole year through, may many blessings be yours!
Your friends at Prince Resort!
Imagine a festive New Year's Eve party at an ocean front setting on the Cherry Grove beach in beautiful South Carolina. In the back-drop and from almost any angle in the room, merrymakers see an awesome view, top to bottom, of the universe - glistening water, the night's sky, and a broad expanse of possibilities ahead. This is the location for the New Year's Eve event at 3500 Ocean Grill, marking the arrival of 2009. We hope you will shake out your party duds, limber up your dance moves, and come on along for a fabulous evening of food and fun!
In addition to the delicious menu planned by Chef George, we are pleased to announce that Sam Favata's Quintet has its instruments tuned and ready for the big event. Once the dance floor is in place and the party amenities and dinner are ready, the only remaining pieces of this festivity will be December 31st and YOU. If you have not already made a decision about where you will spend New Year's Eve, we invite you to join us for what is sure to be the party of the year!

Prince Resort extends accolades to Diane Phelan, its Executive Assistant in charge of financial and accounting business matters. As a member of the international honors society Beta Gamma Sigma, she successfully completed a rigorous program for the Bachelor's of Science degree in business management from Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC, and graduated on December 13th with high marks. The ceremony itself took place at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center where her family and friends attended to wish her well.
Diane has been an integral part of Prince's management since the company acquired the resort in May of this year and also worked at the resort prior to that time, as well, so she has seen many changes and looks forward to being a part of the future here. She is eager to use her business knowledge on the company's behalf to help it grow and prosper and also to explore new and exciting business trends that are bound to occur along the Grand Strand area.
Well done, Diane!
Apple Bundt Cake
This wholesome cake, especially tasty in the cooler weather, yields 12 servings.
Preparation time: 30 minutes. Cook time: 1 hour. Total time: 2 hours
INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups apples - peeled, cored and diced
- 1 tablespoon white sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup orange juice
- 2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar for dusting
DIRECTIONS
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10 inch Bundt or tube pan. In a medium bowl, combine the diced apples, 1 tablespoon white sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon; set aside. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt; set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine 2 cups white sugar, oil, orange juice, vanilla and eggs. Beat at high speed until smooth. Stir in flour mixture. Fold in chopped walnuts.
- Pour 1/3 of the batter into prepared pan. Sprinkle with 1/2 of the apple mixture. Alternate layers of batter and filling, ending with batter. Use a knife or spatula gently to distribute the apples evenly with the cake mixture (some cooks have even added extra apples).
- Bake in preheated oven for 55 to 60 minutes, or until the top springs back when lightly touched. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.
For a special twist of sweetness instead of the dusting of confectioners' sugar, try drizzling a maple/pecan glaze on the cooled cake.
INGREDIENTS for optional glaze:
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons authentic maple syrup
- 3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
- 3 tablespoons pecan pieces (finely chopped pecans), optional
PREPARATION of the glaze:
- In a small saucepan, combine the butter, maple syrup, and cream. Bring the mixture to a boil.
- Continue to boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and sift in the confectioners' sugar to the hot mixture.
- Whisk mixture until smooth.
- Let cool for about 15 to 20 minutes, until slightly thickened.
- Stir in the finely chopped pecans (optional).
- Drizzle the mixture over the completely cooled cake.

Guest Comments
I was surprised to receive such an informative briefing. It shows your commitment to guests to keep them informed of recent / upcoming events. Our stay was in October and we have spoken to many friends and family concerning our positive experience. While we won't be in the Carolinas in the near future, we have already concluded that the Prince will be our hotel of choice.

What a great newletter...and how wonderful to receive a 'thanks' for our visit. You all have a great thing going!...We enjoyed our visit in November sooo much...this was a 'return' trip to your resort since our first visit was beyond our expectations. We have been coming to Myrtle Beach all our lives and actually found The Prince on line, liked what we saw, and decided to give it a try...and your accommodations, staff, and facilities met every expectation. We even caught a mess of 'fish'! Thanks for all you do and keep up the good work!...We will be back!.. Have a great Thanksgiving!...

One of the best ways to experience a place that you do not know is in the security of a group of people whom you DO know. In the case of the Grand Strand area, usually someone in the group has been here before and can lead the way for others in the group who might be new to the area. Our knowledgeable and helpful staff can help you arrange everything from accommodations to events, meetings to catering. Fun Facts
These myths and legends about New Year's Eve and Day might be long forgotten, but they allow us a glimpse into our culture, and others, from a different angle:
New Clothes - Wear something new on New Year's Day to ensure that prosperity will be part of your new year.
Letting the Old Year Out -- Open all (not just the front) doors of your home at midnight to let out the old elements of the "Old Year." This must occur before the "New Year" can come in.
Keeping out Evil Spirits - Guide the youngest child in the household to light a candle that will burn throughout the night until morning. In Ireland especially, this candle light is considered to ward off evil spirits from the household. Also, the tradition originates from 17th century Ireland where candles in windows were said to welcome Christ and weary travelers.
Loud Noises at Midnight - Noisemakers, fireworks, cheering! Our New Year's Eve noise at the stroke of midnight is not just celebration. Stories from history tells us that it was said to drive out the devil who was called "Old Scratch" from the stale Old Year. (This same reason is cited in ringing church bells at weddings.)
Loud Noises at Midnight and New Year's Day - To avoid a pattern of bad fortune through the New Year, we should avoid crying from midnight until New Year's Day at midnight.
Loud Noises and Crying - Because crying on New Year's Day was said to set the tone for the household for the entire year, naughty children were tolerated, not disciplined, until after New Year's day in case a reprimand might cause them to cry.
Bad Language, Bad Words - No foul words, negative terms, criticism, or swearing should occur on New Year's Day. Death and dying are not to be mentioned. Ghost stories are taboo, and all references to the past year are avoided. Doing so moves everything forward in a positive way to a new beginning in the New Year.
Weather - This year New Year's Day falls on a Thursday. This is significant in legend because it suggests that we will have a hard and windy winter but a good summer and harvest - good news for the hospitality industry along the Grand Strand!
Weather - During sunrise on New Year's Day, if the wind blows from the south, there will be fine weather and prosperous times in the year ahead. Will you be awake at sunrise to check this?
Weather - During sunrise on New Year's Day, if the wind blows from the north, there will be bad weather (figuratively) all year long.
Weather -- During sunrise on New Year's Day, if the wind blows from the east, there will be famine and calamities (figuratively) all year long.
