July 2008                                                                                                                              Volume 1

Hello, Friends:

Summer has arrived, and the beach is beckoning vacationers to its sandy shores and playful waves. Here in our picture-perfect Carolina setting of sun-sand-sea, we are greeting families by the carload as they pull in here to this Grand Strand destination. We hope that you have not let rising gasoline prices dampen your spirits and instead will be joining our many other guests who are keeping their sights set on sunny, warm breezes and shore fun.

We have learned that some of our guests even changed their vacation plans from exotic destinations over to our charming seaside paradise the Prince Resort. They discovered that they can bring family and friends to stay here and save money at the same time by using their condo kitchens, all the while enjoying local fun events, exciting live entertainment, and many, many water opportunities at this resort.

In fact, late planners of summer vacations will find a number of options. Openings are still possible. Every day we see eager faces as they unload their gear at the front door and chat enthusiastically about trying their boogie boards on the ocean waves or de-stressing on the lazy river. Some even ask us to book a second return stay later in the summer, and at this time we still have a number of great condos to consider.

So, if you are one of those hesitating to make summer plans, check with us for ways to save. We have fabulous selections. Your very best vacation ever could be just a phone call away. Certainly, with all the amenities Prince Resort has to offer, you'll find plenty of things to see and do to unwind.

Hope to see you soon!

Until then,
Your Friends at Prince Resort

Under New Management

In our continued effort to improve your stay here in the North Myrtle Beach area, we gladly announce that Prince Resort is now under new management by Myrtle Beach Seaside Resorts, effective May 2008. We look forward to treating you like royalty on your next visit to Prince Resort. Myrtle Beach Seaside Resort brings more than 20 years experience in the hospitality business.

We give a warm welcome to Stephanie Chestnut, the new Assistant General Manager of Prince Resort. As part of our new management team, Stephanie will continue our intent to make your stay as wonderful as possible.

Already returning guests have noticed many wonderful changes such as the addition of many new amenities such as the children's activities and front desk ticket sales for many of the area's fine live entertainment events and attractions.

July 4th -- What Went Down and Up

Fun! Food! Fireworks! We heard great glees of pleasure on all fronts from many guests who enjoyed the holiday celebrations here at Prince Resort. Besides the sun's going down and the fireworks' going up on July 4th, happenings here were a lot of fun!

In addition to fireworks, food was a distinctive favorite with everyone, starting with the over 170 portions of the evening's "special," chicken-and-barbequed-ribs, served by our oceanfront restaurant the Ocean Grill. Meanwhile, on the Boardwalk, over 500 burgers and countless hotdogs flew out the food tent door from 6:30 pm until 9 pm, plus over 200 servings of ice cream from the Scoops ice cream shop. Party-goers enjoyed DJ music from SuperFrog Productions from noon until 4 pm, and children's activities, one of the newest amenities at Prince (see details below), delighted the little ones from 11 am to 9 pm. Then, at 9:15 pm, guests enjoyed the poolside 45-minute fireworks display, colorful and amazing pinwheels and rockets exploding overhead, illuminating the night’s sky over North Myrtle Beach. They all thrilled to a birds' eye view of the brilliant colorful explosions, prime "first-row" seating for this, the most spectacular of the summer season's events.

Children's Activities

Guests with children now have even more activity choices for their entertainment. Children ages 5 and older are invited to participate in our fun and exciting children's program, complimentary to guests (note that some activities might include a fee to cover costs of materials). Guests are encouraged to ask at the Front Desk for details, locations, and times and should book their children for specific events, not as general attendance. Activities occur from Monday to Friday, 9:30am-4:30pm. Here are just a few of the items on the schedule:

  • Shark tooth searches
  • Tie-dying tee-shirts
  • Water polo
  • Beach kickball
  • Soccer
  • Games including trivia
  • Many other amusements.

The Cherry Grove Fishing Pier

The Cherry Grove Fishing Pier provides a great place for parents to share their time with the children. Its tackle shop has all kinds of fishing gear for all levels of interest, plus other items such as sunglasses, t-shirts, hats, beach games, and children's sand toys. Of course, fishing is what the pier is most known for. The largest flounder caught on the pier in 2008 was one caught in July weighing over 7 pounds. The largest king mackerel so far in 2008 was caught on the pier in May and weighed in at over 30 pounds. Of course, Cherry Grove's primo fish record still stands: a 1,780 pound tiger shark caught in 1964. To this day, it still holds the only all-tackle world record in South Carolina. Impressive!

Tips for Keeping Cool This Summer

Welcome to summertime at the beach where high temperatures, humidity, and sweat are yours to enjoy! Great for fun in the water, fun on a boat, and fun at the amusement park! This seasonal setting also takes some caution. The American Red Cross suggests the following guidelines for keeping cool and avoiding heat-related illness:

  • Dress for hot weather. Light-weight, light-colored clothing that wicks perspiration is best because it reflects the sun's energy. Also, wear a light-weight hat to protect your head, eyes, and face. Don't forget the little ones in your group, either. Though they might not accept a hat at first, seeing all the adults wearing one will eventually be what a child wants to do.
  • Use an umbrella, tent, or awning to provide valuable shade. Ocean breezes and shade provide a refreshing combination to beat the summer heat.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. Water, sports beverages, or fruit juice consumed on a continual basis keeps the body hydrated, a very important element in preventing heat stroke. Avoid, or minimize, drinking alcohol and caffeine beverages because they dehydrate. Southern sweet tea may taste great, but ice water rehydrates.
  • Take frequent breaks when playing or working in the hot and humid sunny conditions.
  • Protein foods nourish the mind and the body, but they also raise metabolic heat. For your beach events, limit the amount of protein you eat, plan smaller but more frequent meals, and eat more frequently during the daytime hours. Napping, too, especially during the warmer period of noon to 4 pm will help renew your energy.
  • Avoid strenuous activity during the heat of the day (noon to 4 pm). If signs of heat stroke occur (see below), stop and find a cool, shady resting place. Symptoms of heat stroke are absence of sweating, rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, weakness/fatigue, dizziness, muscle cramping, nausea/vomiting, confusion/disorientation. If you or someone with you experiences these signs of heat stroke, cease activity immediately and find a cool, shaded place to rest.
  • Put ice packs under the arms, back of neck, and groin areas. Spray cool or tepid water on the face or torso. Notify emergency services 911 immediately.
  • Shade matters. Use an umbrella, when possible for shade.
  • When temperatures are high and even higher is the heat index (that is, what the temperature REALLY feels like), stay indoors. People with low tolerance for extremes should take heed to UV rankings shown in the news.
