General S. R. Gist (given name as “States Rights” Gist) died during the Civil War at the age of 33. A lawyer and a militia general for the Confederate Army, he rose to fame during the war and was killed in the Franklin-Nashville Campaign, with his body later moved back home to Columbia for final burial.
