If you live in one of the Carolina states, no need to budget a Labor Day get-away flight when you already have the coast within driving distance. According to AAA, Americans are saving money this holiday by scaling down on their travel plans. Holiday road travel is down 13.3%, and with the delay of Labor Day some kids will have already gone back to school. Hey, less road traffic! Come on down for post-Labor Day!

Plant now to invite the Carolina Jessamine with its perky yellow flowers into your winter landscape. It makes a warm and inviting cold-weather addition to any Southern garden. The flowers are fragrant and last from winter to spring. Even though a sun-loving vine, it is not hard to control and shows well on trellises and fences. All parts of the plant are poisonous.

The newest exhibit at the Burroughs and Chapin Art Museum pays tribute to our home-grown literary legends. People such as Alice Walker, Eudora Welty, and Pat Conroy come to life in this photographic display that illustrates the importance of literature and the arts in our culture. For the past two weekends, named storms have blown up from the south, along the Atlantic east coast, and back out to sea in the north. While experts are lowering their expectations of storms this year because of El Niño’s calming effects, we have no guarantee for a quieter than normal 2009 season, so keep an eye out through November. Storms bring beauty, as well as concern. Watch for rip current conditions.
