Just over the North Carolina border, supporters of the Shallotte Farmers Market busily work toward their May 2010 opening. Riverside Park in Shallotte is home to this charming market, so more amenities are being built to invite shoppers from around the area. Recently, the market won acclaim from the town of Shallotte at its monthly Board of Aldermen meeting.

The National Golf Foundation states that there is good news in its numbers: 2009 rounds are up 5 percent nationally, though down overall for a ten-year stretch. Golfers tend to stay closer to home with 52% (no decrease in golfing due to the economy), 34% (fewer trips), 22% (spending less), and 2% (economic setbacks). The Intracoastal Christmas Regatta launched the holidays with attendance went well over 30,000 on Saturday. People lined the Intracoastal Waterway up and down the cruising area. The event, called “Yachts for Tots,” also generated many donations of toys for the area’s children who are especially in need this year, one of the most difficult economically that we have experienced in a very long time.
